A flying start from OTIS
In 2005, our Dutch office, then the sole branch of the current OTIS Legal Group, had a client who requested oversight of her interests in Spain. Our founder personally travelled to Barcelona to take care of this matter. However, he encountered multiple obstacles in Spain.
Instead of giving up, he skipped three steps. He established his own law firm, found a beautiful location in the heart of Barcelona, rented an apartment himself, quickly hired three lawyers and decided to assist internationals in Spain.
It was a resounding success.
Up’s and Down’s…
Over time, there were nice clients, interesting cases, but a broad office in Spain is different from a local office with different specializations in the Netherlands, where OTIS started. Given the different areas of law that were in demand, the office in Spain needed to scale up.
OTIS Spain and OTIS Amsterdam hereafter, although legally separate entities, continued together as the OTIS Legal Group with our founder still as the driving force.
Over the years, the team has adapted and grown with the demand from our clients. Some areas of law we phased out, while others grew unexpectedly faster. Never a dull moment with OTIS, now by far the largest Dutch office in Spain with a great, close and international team.
From the Netherlands to Spain and for internationals
Our founder travelled after his clients through Spain or did some research beforehand. And so he also discovered that in Spain there are significant regional differences in legislation, customs and approaches. Where necessary or promising, he repeated the Barcelona approach. In Spain, in addition to Barcelona, there are now branches – in order of opening – in Marbella, Madrid, Mallorca and Ibiza.
OTIS is the only Dutch firm in Spain with a branch in the Netherlands, facilitating seamless coordination between the two countries. This unique advantage extends internationally, benefiting companies and families with interests in Spain. OTIS enjoys collaborating with other international advisors and law firms, ensuring comprehensive representation of both international and Spanish interests.
Corporations, investors and families
Over the years, the spectrum has shifted from individuals, who are still welcome, to companies, family businesses, investors, banks and insurers. This is partly because the interests they have in Spain tend to be larger, making those cases larger, requiring more lawyers and, in addition, requiring them to specialize again. In this way, the firm has automatically moved to the higher segments of the market.

In fact, our greatest specialization is still what our founder had in mind, in the legal field being a client-oriented bridge between internationals and Spain.
We do not have to keep ‘reinventing’ the wheel for our clients.
